On the Shelves at Powell's: Under False Flags

Just at quick post to note what a thrill it was for this Portland boy to see copies of Under False Flags: A Novel appear on the shelves at Powell's Books mothership location on W. Burnside.

I've been going in Powell's since my teens and now live near the main store. It's always been close, like the local library, familiar and yet exotic from all the far-flung stories and knowledge arriving inside all those books. But seeing a book of your own land in the local bookstore of legend is a surreal experience that amazed me more than expected, in a good way.

I thought I was pretty jaded, having traveled a hell of a long way on that hard road a writer chooses. Moments like these remind me to stop and enjoy the ride.

Latest Translation Revealed: Mark of Cain

My translation of Marcus Hünnebeck's bestselling crime thriller Mark of Cain (Kainsmal) is scheduled for release this January. Here's the story:

Working for the police had criminal psychologist Christian Moll losing so much sleep that, despite years of successfully helping investigators unwind the twisted minds of murderers, he decided to call it quits. But when a disturbing pattern in recent cases begins to emerge, he chooses to postpone his self-imposed retirement in order to help out an old flame.

Detective Katharina Rosenberg has a new case and a new cop killer on the run. When two colleagues are murdered in rapid succession, a shocking theory emerges: Is someone killing off the detectives Christian worked alongside solving homicide cases? And is Katharina next?

Now, Katharina and Christian must team up once again to catch the murderer before it’s too late. With their buried passion rising to the surface, they give in to their desire while racing against time to find the vengeful cop killer before he finds them.

Marcus Hünnebeck self-published several successful titles before the release of Mark of Cain. He currently lives in the Rhineland. Original German version: Kainsmal.

Published by AmazonCrossing, Mark of Cain is scheduled for paperback, ebook, and audiobook versions. Find details for pre-ordering the book on the Translation page.

New Novel Released: Under False Flags

I'm happy to announce the release of Under False Flags, my first new novel since The Losing Role and the first of a few releases coming in the next year. It's available in paperback, ebook, and audiobook.

In Under False Flags, two soldiers on opposing sides—one American, one German—find the courage to desert together after being forced into suicidal duty during the brutal Battle of the Bulge of 1944. It's a gritty war tale that turns conventional notions of heroism on their head. Find out more about the book here, including bookstore links.

Fellow Portlanders, I'm told you can find the paperback soon at Powell's Books, most local Barnes & Noble stores, Annie Bloom's Books, and others found here via IndieBound.

In Under False Flags, the relentless bloodbath of World War II has become a treacherous prison for both American GI Wendell Lett and German Navy seaman Holger Frings. Lett’s Belgian lover Heloise offers him deliverance from war, but soon Lett is forced into a reckless false flag mission at the same time that Frings must join a similar German operation just as deadly.

The two enemies' fates collide in December 1944 during the bloody Battle of the Bulge. When Lett and Frings find themselves stranded together, they decide to desert and team up to help Lett find his way back to his Heloise in her war-ravaged town. Under False Flags is a gritty war tale that turns conventional notions of heroism and honor on their head.

Translation Release Announced: Until the Debt is Paid

I'm pleased to report that my translation of Alexander Hartung's bestselling crime thriller Until the Debt is Paid is scheduled for release this November. Here's a summary:

Berlin detective Jan Tommen expected to wake up with a hangover—not a murder charge. But a well-known judge has been brutally killed and hard evidence places Jan at the crime scene. When disturbing gaps in Jan’s memory make finding an alibi impossible, the case against him looks open and shut.

Faced with life on the inside, Jan flees police custody to take refuge with an old friend deeply enmeshed in the capital’s seedy underworld. Hampered by a citywide manhunt, Jan soon finds that investigating leads while eluding capture isn’t easy. Before long, he’s relying on a team of misfits for help, including an icy blonde medical examiner and a brilliant but reclusive computer whiz.

When a lucky break leads Jan to connect the murders to a heinous trafficking ring, the team risks it all to find answers. Meanwhile, the body count continues to rise and the police department starts to close in. Desperate to prove his innocence, Jan must identify the true killer—before his time finally runs out.

Alexander Hartung lives in his hometown of Mannheim, Germany, with his wife and young son. The original German version is titled Bis alle Schuld beglichen.

Published by AmazonCrossing, Until the Debt is Paid is scheduled for paperback, ebook, and audiobook versions. Find details for pre-ordering the book on the Translation page.
